Dunas de Puerto Rico Hojas de Nuestro Ambiente: Dunas de Puerto Rico

The Caribbean Center for the Reduction of Aquatic Debris operates the Puerto Rico Dune Restoration Program as part of collaborative agreement between the University of Puerto Rico at Aguadilla, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.  The program has the goal of restoring and conserving a 1.5 km segment of primary dunes parallel to PR466 in the municipality of Isabela. An area that has been severely exploited and depleted in the past.  The program has two main components: restoration and education/outreach. The program has a strong community base since most of the restoration work will be done by community volunteers and students.  Sand fences will be installed in order to promote the accumulation of sand in the area and vegetation will be planted to stabilize the dunes.  Also a series of educational workshops and talks will be offered to different demographic groups in order to increase the level of knowledge of the community on the importance of coastal dunes.
